Container Door Hardware, Made in America

Ask most people what fails on a standard shipping container and they might say the floor, or corrosion, or a damaged corner post. In practice, the doors fail first.

They are the only moving assembly on the unit. Every other part of a container is welded, fixed and static. The doors have hinges that carry load through a full arc of travel, locking bars that rotate under tension, cams that have to seat precisely against keepers, and a gasket that has to hold a weathertight seal after a decade of that cycle repeating. They are also the security interface. Customs seals attach to the locking gear. The doors are what inspection examines first.

And on almost every container in the global fleet, that hardware has had to come from overseas. Until now. Door hardware is the third container component we have brought into domestic production.

In August we announced the release of 100% Made in America ISO 1161 corner castings to the U.S. domestic market, the standardized fittings used to lift, stack and secure every container in the intermodal system.

Last month we announced that we are now offering U.S. Steel verdeX® weathering steel for container manufacturing, covering corrugated side, end and roof panels, structural tubes and plate.

Today it is the door hardware.

What that covers

Working with our American manufacturing partners, we now produce the following standard container door components domestically:

  • Hinges, hinge pins and hinge lugs
  • Locking bars and cam assemblies
  • Handles, handle retainers and keepers
  • Door seals and associated hardware

These are the components that make a container functional, secure and mission-ready. Without them the structure is just a box.

Why the small parts matter

There is a tendency in supply chain conversations to focus on the big items. The steel. The structure.

But domestic qualification does not work that way, and neither does resilience. A container built from American steel on an American line, with imported hinges and cam gear, is not a domestically manufactured container. The provenance of the whole assembly determines the provenance of the unit.

There is also a practical dimension. Door hardware is a consumable in a way structural steel is not. Over a 20-year service life a container will need hinge pins, cams, keepers and seals replaced. If the only source for those parts is a supply chain that runs through one region, then every repair depends on that supply chain staying open.

Domestic sourcing is not only about where the container was born. It is about whether it can be kept in service.

For defense and maritime programs, where a container out of service is a capability out of service, that distinction matters. Mission readiness is not a property of the steel. It is a property of the whole system, down to the last pin.

A note on doors

CakeBoxx is best known for a container without any. Although we can, and regularly do, build specialized containers with doors, our patented two-piece deck-and-lid design removes the need for the door end entirely. This eliminates the most common failure point and the primary concealment risk, and is why our doorless two-piece configuration holds Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology designation under the DHS SAFETY Act.

So why are we building door hardware in the U.S.?

Because this program is not about specialized CakeBoxx products. The standard ISO container is the single most widely used piece of transport equipment in the world, and almost none of them are made here. This is about restoring a critically important but lost capability to the United States, to the specifications global trade and defense logistics uses. That means doors, and it means every part on them.
